Question #1:

Bird Lovers!! Parrotlet. Love Bird OR Green-Cheeked Conure - Need Opinion?

Our family is considering a new avian member. I am happy with my doves, but my husband and daughter want a more personable member of the family. We had parakeets, but that's the only member of the parrot family we've experienced first-hand. Here's what we're looking for

Fairly small as parrots/parrot types go.
Fairly quiet (I've heard the GC Conures are some of the quietest)
Talking ability is nice, but not critical.
Good temperament is important (assume bird will be a hand-fed baby and given attention. We home-school, so we're here most of the day to provide affection and company and my daughter chatters all the time, so that won't be a problem.)

We're not looking for one of the extremely long-lived parrots (a friend has a African Gray that will outlive her, and it's jealous of her kids. We're not ready for that kind of commitment.)

I just want to hear opinions from "real" people..not just pet shop owners or people trying to sell their birds. I want to hear the good, the bad and the ugly so that we can make a good choice. Answer Now! The person with the winning answer can come and claim a FREE PET GOAT WETHER (black & white) if they live in East Texas!!! :)
THANKS y'all! The conures are sounding better and better so far! I could handle 20-30 years.
You are ALL giving such wonderful answers. I don't know how I'm going to choose the "best!"

Question #2:

Green Cheeked Conures?

Hi, I was with my mom buying some pellets for our Hahns Macaw, Chewy. I saw this green cheeked conure and he is so adorable he was following me around in his cage!! So, I picked him up, he was very sweet and he let me pet his head, he's soo cute! Chewy (my mom's parrot) is not as cuddly to me, he has bonded to my mom, but he still lets me have a snuggle, after he growls though! Anyways I don't know how to tell my Dad I want the conure. I want him for my grad. present, how do I tell him, efficiently so he might say yes?

1. I can't really show him anything, he is in Iraq and the video chat is laggy, so I need to be able to like tell him about the conures.

2. Could you guys tell me some things about them, I have been researching them too, but x-tra facts would help a lot!!

3. I have some experiencee with parrots my mom has one, the store I want to get the conure from is reliable they buy from good breeders and it is not a huge chain.

4. I'm responsible, I feed the parakeets, dog, and get very good grades to responsibility is not an issue.

Thank You!!
Not @ college, middle school!!

Question #3:

What bird species should i start out with?

I really want to get a bird, parrot more specifically. Should I start out with smaller birds like parakeets to get into the swing of bird care, or should I go ahead and invest in a Green Cheeked Conure? I have read extensively on each species and I know people who owned an exotic bird so I have handled larger birds before, just not cared for one. PLEASE HELP!

Question #4:

Just got a Conure. He's acting weird?

I just bought a Green Cheeked Conure a few hours ago. It's bedtime and I just put him in his new cage, and all he wants to do is hang upside down or cling on to the bars. He doesn't seem to want to sit on the perches. Is that normal? I've owned parakeets and lovebirds before and they've never done this. I know Conures can be weirdos sometimes but is this normal for a weirdo?

Question #5:

Question #7:

How do I get my Green Cheek Conure to stop biting?

Hi, I have recently adopted a Cinnamon Green Cheeked Conure from a local pet shop. He is hand-fed and is still being weaned right now. When I try to pet him, he runs away and just recently he started biting me! Even when I wrap him up in a towel and try to pet his head or back he bites anything in his reach and holds it for the longest time (which is usually my hand or finger). I know that you shouldn't pull away so I just try to sit there until he stops but I have to end up putting him back. He bites me to the point where I start to bleed and I wanted to know if there was any way that I could stop him. I know that he's just a baby (about 3 months old) but will he grow out of this? I haven't had any experience with birds other than cockatiels and parakeets but it would really help if someone who has had this experience to tell me if he will grow out of it or if he will be like this forever. I am willing to do any form of training to get him to stop biting me and I'm hoping that once his wings are clipped, I can pet him without any trouble at all. Please post with any information it would be very helpful!!!

Question #8:

What kind of bird should I get?

I've always wanted a bird, off and on, and now i really really want one. I'm 13, so i go to school 7 hours a day, and have 30 minutest to 1 1/2 hours of homework a day. I have 2 dogs which also need attention. So that leaves me with about an hour to 3 of time to play with it. I wanted a few finches (my parents hate the idea of a pet you can't play with), lineolated parakeet, budgie, cockatiel, green cheeked conure, or anything that you think i might be ok with. I have other pets, and i take good care of them, (very responsible) I just don't know which one to get.

Question #9:

Which bird is your favorite?

I am going to invest in some new birds to breed and sell adn I wanted to know which bird is your favorite and which one you would choose to be your pet.

MY options are:
1) Green Cheeked/Pineapple/Sun Conures
2) Red-Rumped Parakeets
3) Cockatiels
4) Lovebirds

I would like to hear your favorites if they are not up here! Im looking for the most popular SELLING bird, not necessarily the most popular bird in numbers. If you dont like a specific breed, please tell me why!! Thanks for your opinion! =)
My other choice is Parrolets!

Question #11:

Is this a common display of Green-Cheeked Parakeets?

I have a Green-Cheeked Parakeet (I often refer to him as a conure) that is about two and a half years old. When I take him out to play, he is mellow when I just hang-out and do nothing, but what I mean is he gets aggressive when I pick up a book or magazine up and begin to read. I'm convinced that he is trying to garner my attention, but what he does is quite interesting. He'll sit on the base of my neck and rub and nip (very lightly) at my skin with his beak, and here's where it gets a little strange: It feels good (like an endogenous chemical good) but in an uncertain way. I'd like to know why he does this, and why it has such a strange effect on me. Is there some kind of evolutionary background involved that plays on a human/bird connection? Or is this just some kind of affectionate display that my bird expresses? Or am I just thinking too deeply about it? Well he certainly doesn't mind me typing, but he is getting kind of rowdy and is rummaging on my # pad. So I'll let you go, thank you for reading and possibly answering.

Question #12:

What are good birds for a beginner?

I have never owned a bird before, and I would really like to get one. I still don't know what kind is best for me. I have done a lot of research so far and I plan on doing more on the kind of bird I decide on. So, I have a budget of around $300 on just the bird and the cage. I go to school for about 7 hours a day (Would a bird be okay alone for this long, or should I get it a friend?) I was thinking either a cockatiel, lovebird, parrotlet, or green cheeked conure. I don't really want a parakeet, but do you have any other suggestion? So, what kind do you think would be best for me? Could you also list positives/negatives of these birds. Thanks so much in advance!!

Question #13:

I have a new Conure....?

I have a 4 month old Maroon Bellied Conure (also called a Green Cheeked Conure) that I have had for about a month. I bought him from Petco. He has a spacious cage, lots of good toys, and has daily ineraction. He learned "step up" pretty quickly, and comes out of his cage eagerly each and every time. He likes to perch on my finger, and enjoys being talked to. he reacently learned a "wolf whistle".

My problem is... I unfortunately let him perch on my head because he would preen my hair and i found it cute- Im afraid it has turned into a control issue for him now. If i put him on my shoulder when i'm carrying him around the house, he will almost immediately seek refuge on my head. If i reach up to try and grab him off, he will "growl/scream" and bite me. I also try using my finger to ask him to step up, and he will bite my finger about 75% of the time. It is a sharp pinch, and rather unpleasant. Generally when this happens, I take him to his cage for a "time out". When he bites me otherwise, i gently but firmly grasp his beak and tell him "no." i do NOT hit my bird, nor do i scream at him, but i usually say "Ouch! No." in a deep voice.

I understand that he is a baby and will take time to learn, but I am so sick of him biting because it hurts :( I don't even want to play with him anymore because he's a jerk, but I know that if I ignore him, it'll make matters worse.

What can I be doing to help him in this learning process? How do I keep him from trying to get on my head all the time? How can I keep him from pretending that I'm his midday snack?

Help is appreciated- unfortunately, this conure is a lot different from the parakeets ive had in the past... meaning, a much harder bite.

Question #14:

Question #15:

Is a green-cheeked conure a good family bird?

I currently have 4 healthy, little parakeets with crazy but fun personalities. I'm looking to get another pet bird to add to my family's wide menagerie of pets. (Don't worry, we don't have cats.) I saw a very young green-cheeked conure at the petstore and I instantly fell in love with it. When I put my hand against the glass; it rubbed its head against the glass. My parents are a little uncertain of getting a new bird and caring for it when I go to college; but do you think this little guy is worth it? I'm willing to spend all of my savings on him, he's a little darling.

I've been looking on the internet for some background information on these birds, but nothing I've read is really informative. Background information would be great, too! (Just don't overwork yourselves.)

Question #16:

Is this true about this bird's diet?? (link in description) answer soon please for 10 points!?

Hi, i was reading up on the diet of green cheek conures, and i stumbled upon a wikipedia link about them. I was reading and then i found a section about the diet of these birds. I read that a good thumb rule is that 30% should be pellet, 10% should be seed, and 70% should be cooked food and fresh fruits, and veggies. Is this true???? Here's the link: Click Here

P.S. I know that some things on wikipedia, and other websites are fake, and not true answers.

Question #17:

How do i get my birds to mate?

my babyish parakeet seems to have fallen in love with my green cheeked cunure and they kiss and clean each others feathers. I think they like eachother but i don't know if they are boy or girl a little help here

Question #18:

Can a parakeet love another kind of bird

My baby parakeet has fallen in love with my 2nd bird a green cheeked conure. They kind of kiss and clean each other should i put them in the same cage

Question #19:

How can I convince my mom let me get a conure?

I currently have a 6 year old guinea pig and a 4 year old budgie.

I love my budgie to death, but I never really wanted a parakeet, I actually found him abandoned in a show cage [in a paper bag] at the park. But for the longest time, I've wanted a conure. There are two hand-fed green cheeked conures at the petco near my house, and they are still being weaned. How can I convince my mom to let me get the conure? She knows that I know everything about everything about birds, and I have enough money to buy it. Thanks <3

Question #20:

Please recommend a sweet bird for me?

I'm 15 years old with lots of time on my hands. I've had experience with Parakeets and Cockatiels in the past, and I didn't particularly care for them. I would like a hearty bird that is affectionate and medium-maintainance. I'm planning on adopting, and my budget for all start-up necessities is around $600-$700. I was considering a Sun Conure or Green-Cheeked Conure. I would like something medium-sized. I was planning on getting only one Conure if that's what I chose. I want something that enjoys attention and is playful, but not something too needy that will get depressed without hours of interaction per day. I'd like something that wouldn't be too spooked by the sight of other animals (dogs) and also isn't terribly noisy. Whether or not it can talk isn't a concern.
Also, is it possible to house a Cockatiel and a Conure together?

Thanks for any suggestions!

By the way, I live in a pet-friendly house not terribly close to neighbors.
