all about parakeets - Parakeet Illness Questions

Question #1:

Can a bird make a child sick?

My 3 year old daughter keeps having a reoccuring illness. I don't care to mention it to see if anyone can get it correct with there answer. I am just wanting the knowledge if birds cause any illness in children. This is a parakeet we have had in our home for 3 years, so the bird in not new or ill. Is there an illness found in children with birds? Thanks for your help

Question #2:

What illness did my parakeets die from and is it contagious?

We have a breeding pair and the last couple batches of babies have died from this. Today, the mother died too.
They were acting lethargic, fluffing feathers, laying down and had crusty droppings that stuck to their opening.
I'm just wondering what to do about the other birds in our house. Can they catch it?

Question #3:

I'm getting a bird... What should I clean the cage with first?

I am getting a green cheek conure. I want to be fully prepared first though before I get the actual bird. I found this nice cage online that looks like it's great quality and roomy, for an affordable price, with extras. I've contacted them and I'm probably going to be their buyer.

Obviously they have had a bird in this cage before though. I am assuming I need to clean and disinfect it before I put a bird in it, right? To avoid spreading disease or illnesses, etc? I'm wondering what I should do it with to keep the surfaces in the cage from being toxic to the bird?

this is my first medium/larger sized bird. I've had parakeets, finches etc... I'm just trying to be prepared.

Question #4:

What could be wrong with my parakeet?

well i got him yesterday and he seemed just fine, a little frightened. Then today i got it out of its cage and had him in my finger for a while though sometimes it would run away. But then i gave it some millet seed and he ate really quickly and loved it, then i noticed he started to close his eyes and do this weird thing with his beak and he would like make a little noise with the beak. I have all the conditions for him, he has a nice big cage all to himself with lots of toys food water and a nest for coziness, what could be wrong. The i also noticed he would put his head in his wings, and that is a sign of sickness since birds hide their illness. Please help me im crying and i dont know what to do, i dont want it to die. Should i take it back to the petstore?
also he just lays in one same spot and he gets really fat and once in a while he just shakes and opens his feathers, sometimes he has his eyes open when i look thru the corner of my eyes, but then when i look at him he will quickly close them again, as if he doesnt want me to look at him.
Also he is always falling of its perch and sometimes its hard for him to get back up on it, and he is breathig pretty weirdly.

Question #5:

parakeet odd behavior?

We have a new parakeet that behavior alternates between hours one hour he was exercise and flap his wings and fly climb around in his cage and mess with his swing and even start scratching his/her food and make a mess... T_T; than it will just lat at the bottom of the cage which i read is a sign of illness than an hour later go around and be overly hyper again cheeping and running around. is this normal for a parakeet? Also we didn't get him but a week ago and it's super paranoid of human hands is this healthy??

Question #6:

My New Baby Parakeet.?

So I just got a 3 month old Budgie today and it's shaking a lot. It has a huge block of stool stuck on its bottom and at times, especially when I try to interact with it, it heaves. His bottom looks swollen too, but the sales associate said that he must've been eating a lot of the orange pellets. Should I believe that? Anyway, when I got him at the store, he seemed more than fine. He was super energetic as he was trying to fly away while being introduced to me; or being put in the carrier. I'm worried. I know it's the first day and all, but the sudden change of behaviour and showing signs of illness/symptoms seems a bit unordinary. Anyone know what to do to or suggest doing? Urgent, please. ):

Question #7:

parakeets???????????????????????

i was thinking about getting parakeets.i have read up on them and know quite a bit but i recently lost two guinea pigs in February due to illness and i feel bad replacing them with a parakeet but guinea pigs just aren't my thing.do u think im cruel just replacing them?i love birds and i really want a parakeet im sure it will be fine because the reason my guinea pigs died early is because i got one from an inexperienced breeder and the one she gave me had a, well some sorta of disease and it got them both.

if you have any tips on getting a parakeet please tell me and any other thing that maybe i should purchase to ensure the birds safety?

just thinking......

Question #8:

Budgie swelled nostrils?

I have a year and a half old male Budgie. For awhile, he acted as if he had allergies; sneezing alot while around certain smells. However, I am beginning to doubt that it's allergies now because I looked at the Parakeet's cere and around the nostril area looks swelled. His nostrils look so swelled that they're almost together. Almost the size of a pin hole. He has some heavy breathing, resulting in tail bobing. He sneezes alot and is beginning to sleep more than normal. He still eats, and "tries" to act normal, but I know birds will do that to attempt to cover the illness. I am going to take him to the vet, but what should I do until them for the night? Should I go ahead and seperate him from the other birds?

Question #9:

Is it possible to buy a parakeet from a pet store with an illness not detected, and months later die?

I had bought a parakeet and it seemed okay for several months, then just suddenly died. I was always very careful in caring for the bird and only treated it with the utmost care. We also have parakeets obtained years before this one that are still alive, they did not have too much interaction though.

Question #10:

Labored breathing in parakeet PLEASE HELP, especially if you are a vet, or avian specialist!?

I adopted a 7 year old male parakeet about 2 weeks ago. Recently, he seems to be having difficulty breathing. His breathing looks more labored, and his whole body moves as he breathes. He is not very active (he lived in a bathroom for 7 years with a mirror as his only companion, so he usually just stays on his perch and looks in the mirror) but he eats well, isn't lethargic, keeps up with his preening, and his stools are normal. I'm not sure about his water intake, because I change it in the morning and at night, and he can't possibly drink very much, being so small, so I don't know if he is drinking much, or at all. As far as I know, we don't have anything in the house that should be giving him respiratory problems. We also don't have an A/C, so might he be overheated? My 2 cockatiels seem fine, though. I'm scheduling a vet appointment for Friday, but is there anything I can do, and should I see if I can get an earlier appointment? (I already know that birds hide their illnesses)

Question #11:

enthunasia- on an animal...what should i do? :S?

euthanasia (killing a person or an animal by putting them to sleep) - im seriously against this type of act....i hate the word......i hate everything about it and its against my religion. one of my parakeets named snow is very very ill. she is suffering from a type of illness and critical liver disease.the vet was really shocked when she found out that my bird was suffering from this rare illness, at such a young age...her exact words were " ive worked with birds for 25 years but i have never ever found a bird, this young, suffering from this rare illness and disease". i totally forgot what kind of rare illness it was...so i cant really tell u.. :S by the way my budgie is only 7 months old. she told me that it wasn't my fault and it was the breeders fault... she told me that im gonna have to euthanize the bird so that it doesn't have to suffer any longer. i began to cry when she said that....its against my religion...its against my Will..my belief...i dunno what the fuuk to do :L the vets have given me medicine for snowy, to see if she gets Better....but that's only for the liver disease....im just so upset right now..she may be a ordinary bird to everyone else..but shes family to me...i have one week left until next thursday to see if she gets better..if she doesn't get better, should i euthanize her? my budgies partner, yoshi, might feel more lonely and upset if snowy goes...i am thinking about getting another female budgie for him if i have no other choice but to euthanize her....but im not sure if i should do it..by the way, im a muslim.. please please please help me out here! xxx :[
euthanasia is like playing god. your basiclly killing/murdering/ taking away an animals soul, which in islam, is also forbidden and is a sin. it is also a bit like commiting suicide. im so confused and i seriously dont know what to dooo arghhh :L

Question #12:

will my parakeets get me sick or any illness like that if i keep them in my room?

i wanted to have my birds in my room but i just wanted to be sure thanks :)

Question #13:

whats wrong with my female parakeet? (PLZ read)?

my 1 year old female parakeet screams alot, and doesnt like any cage mate i put with her, i put a male parakeet with her and she just ignored him and i even went out and bought a cockatiel with her and she liked him at first but started getting aggresive with him, to the point of screaming at him when he ate, i had to take him out because he wouldn't eat, so now she's alone which is a problem, last time she was alone she got way to obbsessed with her mirror, she would sit in front of it and act like she wanted it to mate with her, she would put her tail up in the air and lean forward and she would stop and peck and kick the mirror, and she was at the point where she wouldnt leave the mirror, which ment she wouldnt eat, so then i took the mirror out and she got too depressed where she still wouldnt eat, thats when i got the cockatiel, she's alone now and she has a mirror which i dont want her to have because shes already showing signs that she likes it too much, so what could be wrong with her? some kind of illness or mental illness? and i know she could die from it, so what can i do to help her? she doesnt like me at all so socializeing with me wont work, and im not going to breed her so im not getting her a male parakeet and im not getting her a female parakeet cause i know they will fight. so what could be wrong with her?
and don't tell me that they don't need a nestbox to mate, my breeding pair have mated and had eggs without a nestbox.
*******i ment, that they need a nest box to mate*******

Question #14:

My parakeet's tail feathers have fallen out. Where they used to be looks bloody and red. What happened?

could a cat could have caused this? Or is it some type of illness? I only just noticed it today. will he be okay? he is old.
He is also acting strange; ruffling his feathers and being very quiet, sitting in one area for a long time, squinting his eyes..

Question #15:

Is it common for a parakeet to choke to death?

I had a parakeet that was about 4 or 5 months old. She was fine and then all of a sudden last night she looked as if she was choking and was making squeaky noises. Her tail was going up and down when she breathed. After a while she stopped making the noise. She was looking like she was trying to regurgitate. A few times I saw her hook her beak to a bar on the cage high above the perch and she was only on the perch by one foot... she was almost hanging and stretching her neck. What she trying to clear her airway? Then my husband found her dead. All this was over a few hours. As I said she didnt seem sick at all before that.... not puffed up at all. Could she have choked on a seed? I had a bird bar in the cage... I forget when it is called because my mom bought it for the birds... it looks like a chewy candy bar made of seeds and dry fruit. Could she have gotten a hard raisin or a seed that was too big? I would hate to think she was sick and I didn't notice. I always take my burds to the vet at the first sign of illness, even if it is just because they don't look right. Thank you.

Question #16:

What can I do to help my new, sickly parakeet?

I just purchased a male parakeet yesterday from a breeder who sells their birds at the flea market. My female Aurora was looking for someone to play with and I came across this bird yesterday. He seemed healthy (I know birds hide their illnesses) yesterday but today has started to show signs of illness. He has a small bald spot suddenly under his wing and has started having diarrhea. I know that the over the counter antibiotics don't work for curing illness, so I need some help. Can this be just some normal nervous behavior from starting on new food and getting a new home? Or could this be something more serious. I have tried emailing the "breeder" but I got an error message and they are only open on the weekends. I will try to find a number somewhere to contact them tomorrow during business hours but I need some help now. What can I do for him now before this gets any worse? I also have kept him separate from Aurora and planned on keeping him in a separate cage for a few weeks. A vet might not be in the budget right now and hopefully there is a health guarantee from the breeder. Any advice you have would be greatly appreciated.

Question #17:

Parakeet/ budgie health issue?

There are some parakeets at the animal shelter and I was thinking of adopt one (or two). They all look healthy except for one that has something like a minor scratch above his cere. Just where the cere meets the feathers it looks there is a little dark-colored rough spot there like maybe another bird was pecking at him (though currently he's a cage by himself). The cere is deep blue so it seems to be male. This one was a "stray" meaning I assume someone found it outdoors on their bird feeder or something. Could it be mites, or how would I know if it is serious? Any pics of common cere illnesses? I wanted to adopt this bird since it has been there the longest, but if it could be a serious health issue I could adopt a different bird. Otherwise the budgie looks healthy but it is hard ot tell because of course they hide their illnesses. I have been looking in books and online with no luck.

Question #18:

Why does my parakeet vibrate his wings?

My male keet is about 7 or 8 months old and ever since I got him, at random times, he'll sit and vibrate his wings. This usually happens when I'm reaching for him. He's a rather shy bird. I have two females and along with all my keets in the past, none of them vibrated their wings like this.

He's not sickly; probably one of the happiest birds I've ever had. He'll sit all day and sing and play with his toys. He doesn't show any other symptoms of being sick either.

Has anyone ever had a parakeet do this strange behaviour before? I've searched online and can't find a good explanation other than illness, which I'm sure he's not.

Question #19:

parakeet breathing. please look?

so i had two parakeets but one passed away.... sadly my dog got it which i was very upset about. so we got a new one that is with one of the old ones and they get along amazing, but i noticed that the new bird kinda has a very very very soft whistley breathing sound every once in a while. we have had her for two weeks. she seems as happy as can be though and shows no signs of illness. my mom got antibiotics incase at the local petsmart that you can put in water. so i'm just wondering if the bird is alright? my mom didn't want to take her to the vet though because of expenses. but i was just wondering if this is just a natural way the bird breathes or if it'll effect her somehow. should i give the antibiotics? or just wait and see. please help.

Question #20:

Week old parakeet passed away.?

So we have had a parakeet for just over 2 years now, her name is kitty, she's fine and everything. Well we bought a second parakeet, butters, he was 5 months old and we got him about a week or so ago. At first they didn't seem to be into each other but slowly they where comfortable around each other with no issues. The new parakeet showed no signs of illness, eating just fine, pooping just fine. Very playful always coming out of the cage to play with toys and visit the other bird (they where in separate cages). He also would perch on your finger and we taught him "step up" with no issues. Whenever we had to put them in their cages if we left (work or ect) butters would run around the bottom of his cage back and forth looking at kitty's cage, almost like he wanted to escape to go see her, i mean frantic running and running, we usually had to cover them up so he'd calm down but we assumed he was just young and full of energy, we don;t think he was nervous due to silence as we left a radio on near them during the day. Well today when we got home from work, he was lying on the bottom of his cage dead. We are just heartbroken and shocked because he seemed like a 100% healthy bird and we did everything with him we did with the other bird. My guess is he died due to stress or a heart attack due to the running around wanting to get into the other cage. Anyone with an idea as to what caused him to die would be greatly appreciated because i don't think it was an illness that caused him to die and we both feel terrible for what happened to him.
